2.3. x is the latest stable version from osCommerce. This version is more modern as well as a bridge to later updates like osCommerce 3.x.x the idea is that all 2.2 shops should convert to 2.3 and then 3.x.x more easily.
osCommerce 2.3 is very different from 2.2 and are more object oriented and has cleaner codes. 2.3 also has a greater advantage when it comes to SEO (search engine optimization) its built around css and has a faster pageload. But the problem with graphics consists, to produce graphics to 2.3 is difficult, but with a template you will get alot served and by changing some of the template images the store will get a new look.
